What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a cornerstone of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)—a healing system developed over thousands of years to prevent, diagnose, and treat illness. TCM is based on the concept of qi (pronounced “chee”), the vital energy that flows through the body along pathways called meridians. When qi is balanced and flows freely, we experience optimal physical, emotional, and spiritual health. When it becomes blocked or imbalanced—particularly between the complementary forces of yin and yang—illness may occur.

Acupuncture involves the insertion of ultra-fine, sterile needles into specific points along these meridians. This stimulates the body’s natural healing response, helping to restore balance, improve circulation, relieve pain, and support overall well-being. There are over 2,000 acupuncture points across the body, each connected to different organs and systems.

What Does Acupuncture Feel Like?

Most people feel minimal to no pain during acupuncture. The needles are as thin as a strand of hair. You may feel a gentle tingling, a sense of warmth, heaviness, or a dull ache—sensations that often indicate the activation of qi. Many patients report feeling deeply relaxed, calm, or even energized after treatment.

Is Acupuncture Safe?

Yes—acupuncture is very safe when performed by a qualified, licensed practitioner using single-use, sterile needles. In Canada, acupuncture needles are regulated as medical devices, and practitioners are trained to ensure your comfort and safety. As with any healthcare service, it’s important to choose a provider with experience and proper credentials.

A New Chapter in Wellness Care

After 16 wonderful years practicing at Manitoba Clinic, and two more at ACM’s location on Notre Dame Avenue, I’m thrilled to announce the next chapter in my journey—launching my own integrative wellness center: Priscilla Kerr Wellness Ltd.

This evolution marks the transition from Prairie Acupuncture Clinic to a new incorporated entity, focused on building a collaborative, patient-centered team of wellness professionals. Over 18 years, I’ve provided more than 27,000 treatments and helped 962 families on their fertility journeys. Now, I’m expanding this vision to create a truly integrative healthcare environment where practitioners work together to support your unique health goals.

Important Note for Returning Patients

If it has been more than two consecutive years since your last visit, a new consultation will be required. This allows us to update your medical history, perform a full Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) evaluation, and ensure your treatment plan reflects your current health status—just as you would expect with any licensed healthcare provider.
